"Nice night for a 'coon hunt!"
Aubrey did not have time to send an email this week, but asked that I type something up from our phone call conversation. She had a interesting week to say the least!
She has really been getting into the groove of things, and little things that used to cause her stress, she has adjusted to and is enjoying. She can't wait for her niece and younger cousins to come see the play, "Just Plain Anna Amanda" because of what it teaches about believing you're important--and she really connects with the children in her role in this play.
This past week Aubrey and the other 19 sister missionaries staying in an old house were temporarily moved to a luxurious place called the Villa for 5 days. Aubrey got to sleep in a king size bed all by herself during this "vacation". The cause of it came about when several girls complained of loud and awful noises coming from the attic that were keeping girls awake at night. They could hear animal fights and scurrying, and lots of raucous. Once evening, a sister came running up from the basement where they do laundry, hollering that she thought she saw a raccoon down there. The basement is old, unfinished, and pretty run down. The authorities were called to check it out, but found nothing, and seemed to not really believe the story. The next day, 2 sisters were down there and came running up laughing and screaming--reporting that they had definitely seen a raccoon, and that must be what's up in the attic. And then it happened--a sister missionary that plays the guitar jumped up onto the table, guitar in hand, and began singing and playing, making up a hilarious song of raccoons invading their house. All the girls came in to sing along, laughing and dancing around in their pioneer clothes and bloomers. It was like a clip straight out of the musical, "Seven brides for Seven brothers!"
It seemed there was a few families of raccoons living in this missionary house. Aubrey even saw the fur of a raccoon through the vent as a raccoon nestled up close to it inside the wall. So finally, after over a month of complaints, the house was evacuated and exterminators came in--"Nice night for a 'coon hunt!" And thus, the royal vacation at the Villas for Aubrey and friends! While they've since moved back to the house, they have still heard a few suspicious noises. But most of them seem to be gone for now. It's funny that Michael Duval remembers raccoons living in a house they were staying in in Nauvoo years ago. There must be lots of coons in Illinois!
Aubrey is super excited for the Higginson family reunion in Nauvoo this week. Over 30 of us are headed to Nauvoo for some great shows, tours, and sunsets by the Mississippi!
